The 01 Iron Set · Reviewed club by club

Seven clubs.
Seven reasons.
£466.

Caley's 01 irons carry the same shafts and the same grips as sets selling for three times more. That is a big claim, so here it is broken down one club at a time, with the golfers who bought them doing most of the talking, and an honest note on who should not buy this set.

If you came here from the unboxing

That was the 01X utility iron. This is the set it belongs to.

The club coming out of the box in that video is a single 01X utility iron, £109. Same chrome, same stamping, same factory. People watch it, like the look of it, and then ask the obvious question: what does the full set cost.

Seven clubs, 4 through pitching wedge, £466. The rest of this page is why that number is possible without the clubs being rubbish.

The short version

The Caley 01 is a hollow-body, thin-face game improvement iron built for golfers off 16 handicap and above. It ships with KBS Tour Lite shafts and Lamkin Crossline grips, which are the same components fitted to sets that sell in the shops for £1,000 to £1,400.

Caley sells direct from Scotland, so the set is £466. You get 60 days to play them. If they are not for you, send them back.

Seven clubs in the set. Seven reasons, one each.

The long irons get off the ground on their own

The 4 iron is where most sets quietly stop working for club golfers. A 20.5° head with a normal cavity needs speed you probably do not have to launch properly, so it turns into a bag ornament.

The 01 is hollow through the head with the weight pulled low and back, and the face is thin enough to behave more like a small metal wood than a blade. Ball speed goes up, the flight starts higher, and the shot lands steeper instead of running through the back of the green.

Took them to the range, tried the 7 iron first and was amazed by how easy they are to hit well, with excellent trajectory, feel and sound. Within 5 shots the wrapping came off the other irons.

The parts are the expensive parts

This is the bit that decides whether a cheaper set is a bargain or a mistake. Plenty of budget irons save money on the two things you actually touch and feel: the shaft and the grip.

The 01 comes stock with KBS Tour Lite steel shafts in regular or stiff, and Lamkin Crossline grips. Those are not house-brand substitutes. They are the same components specified on sets sitting on the rack at a four-figure price.

I am a 14 handicapper and have been using fitted Cobra irons for 5 years. I was nervous about going for off the shelf clubs, but the reviews and price were so good I decided to go for it. These are incredible value. They are not value clubs though. They are genuinely a very good set of clubs.

Nobody has to pay for the tour van

A £1,200 set is not £1,200 of golf club. It is a head, a shaft, a grip, and then a distributor margin, a retailer margin, a tour staff bill, a television budget and a launch campaign, all stacked on top before you pick it up.

Caley sells direct instead of through shops. There is no middle layer to fund, and no tour player on a retainer. What that removes is the markup, not the club.

Same set, this week: £466, down from £549 for the Open Championship sale.

Superb set of irons. I was looking at the p790s but thought I would give these a punt and I am so glad I did. I actually prefer the look of these and they feel amazing.

It is built around the strike you actually make

Middle of the face is easy. Every iron ever made is fine out of the middle. The set you want is the one that keeps a thin one out of the toe somewhere useful.

The 01 has a 79.5mm blade length and an 8mm top line, so there is more face to hit, and each head is weighted individually so launch and spin stay in the same window from the 4 iron down to the pitching wedge. The sole has a pre-worn leading edge and relief on the trailing edge, which is the difference between the club digging on a wet lie and gliding through it.

I recently replaced my TaylorMade Qi's with a custom set of Caley's. What a difference in feel, forgiveness and distance. I was a steady 17hcp, now down to 15hcp shooting low and mid 80's with this set.

It does not look like a budget set in the bag

This matters more than people admit. Cheap clubs usually announce themselves: heavy paint fill, a badge across the cavity, a logo the size of a beer mat.

The 01 is chrome, clean and quiet, with a small ✖ on the toe and the model number stamped on the hosel. Standing over it you get a mid-size head with a confident top line and 3.4mm of offset in the 7 iron, which is enough to help without looking like a shovel.

Moving from TaylorMade MC irons to Caley 01 irons I am getting much more straight and about 10 yards more distance with each club. I have people asking me at the course and the range about them, and they say the same, that they look great.

The people saying this are not us

1,424 reviews on this set alone, averaging 4.84. Over 8,000 across the range. Independent YouTube reviewers have put the 01 on a launch monitor without being paid to like it.

The most useful review we have is from a golfer who did not believe the other reviews:

I was sceptical of the reviews and I do not normally write any either, but I had been contemplating these for about a year. As a 22 handicapper they are not going to be miracle workers, but clean shots fly further and straighter, and duff shots get me much further down the fairway. The forgiveness they talk about is definitely a thing.

You do not have to be sure. You have 60 days

Buying irons you have never hit, from a brand you met on Facebook, is a fair thing to hesitate over. So the trial is not a returns window on an unopened box. Play them.

Take them to the range, take them round your own course, hit them off your own lies. If after 60 days they are not better than what is in your bag now, send them back for a refund or store credit. If anything is faulty at any point, we post a replacement free.

I was a little apprehensive about buying the Caley clubs but I am so glad I did. Played around four games with them and then I won Captains day.

The honest bit

Who should not buy the 01

The 01 is a game improvement iron. It is built to launch high, go straight and forgive a bad strike, and it makes those trade-offs on purpose.

In any of those cases, buy the 01T instead. Same components, same price, smaller head, less offset, built for mid to scratch.

The questions we actually get

Taken from customer emails and reviews.

How can they be this cheap if the parts are the same?

Because the parts were never the expensive bit. A retail set carries a distributor margin, a shop margin, tour player retainers and an advertising budget on top of the hardware. Caley sells direct, so none of that sits on the price.

I am a 20 handicap. Are these actually for me?

Yes. The 01 is designed for 16 handicap and above. If you are 15 or better and you like to shape shots, look at the 01T instead.

What if they do not suit me?

You have 60 days from delivery. Play them on your own course, not just the mat at the range. If they are not an improvement, send them back for a refund or store credit.

How do I know which flex to pick without a fitting?

The online fitting tool takes about two minutes. It asks your height, your current irons and roughly how far you hit a 7 iron, then recommends regular or stiff. Most club golfers off 16 and above are in regular.

What is in the set?

Seven clubs: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and pitching wedge. Lofts run 20.5°, 23°, 26°, 30°, 34°, 39° and 44°. Swing weight D2 throughout.

How long does delivery take?

Stock sets are picked and packed the next working day and usually land within a few days in the UK. Reviewers regularly report two or three days from ordering.

That is the whole pitch. The clubs either beat what is in your bag or they go back.
